Simona is through to the semifinals at the Transylvania Open in Cluj after an impressive 6-1 6-1 victory over talented compatriot Jaqueline Cristian.

Halep had suffered a “blocked back” during her second-round defeat of Varvara Gracheva, but showed little sign of being affected by it against compatriot Cristian. The former World No.1 played a solid match to preserve her 100% record against fellow Romanians.

Having progressed in just 67 minutes, Halep will next face an intriguing clash against No.6 seed Marta Kostyuk, whom she beat recently in Indian Wells.

I did my best, I treated my back yesterday and this morning, I feel better and happy I could win,

said Halep.

It was much better today, I tried to forget about it and just enjoy. I’m really proud of my performance, it was tough, she’s a tough opponent, she has a bright future.
